Renewal business membership is $50 for a business operated by the owner and not more than one employee; $100 for a business of the owner and two or more employees. Individual membership, without a business is $25; non-profit organizations are $25. All memberships are for the calendar year.

What are the benefits of being a member of the
6th Avenue Merchants’ Association?
The goal of the Sixth Avenue Association stated in the by-laws is: Shall be to work together to address common concerns and affect positive change for a safer, cleaner shopping environment and an economically vibrant Tacoma, Washington business district.
All businesses on Sixth Avenue have gained with the turnaround of the District from its low point in the eighties to early nineties. This new success is due in part to the work of the Merchants Association in conjunction with Tacoma Economic Development Department. As a result, this District has become a leader among the neighborhood business districts of the city.
Periodically, the 6th Avenue Business Association sponsors events intended to increase traffic, awareness and selling opportunities for District businesses. Events include the big summer art festival, Art on the Ave, Children’s Spring Coloring Contest, November’s Day of the Dead, Earth Day Cleanup, Summer Outdoor Market, Wednesdays, at Sixth and Junett, Holiday decoration. Other mini-events are planned as opportunities arise.

In addition, the Association sponsors advertising through community news outlets. Promotion in University of Puget Sound publications reaches the large nearby market of students and their families.
An Association goal is sponsoring the steady increase of public art in the district to amplify the district’s unique character. A number of special pieces have been placed in 2006-07.

An annual evening social event at a member restaurant is held in the Fall to give members more opportunity to become better acquainted with their fellow business persons.
Identification decals are furnished members to display at their business. Special posters will be furnished members at promotional times.
Community effort multiplies individual effort toward District success. All business persons in the Sixth Avenue District are invited to join the Sixth Avenue Merchants Association for continuing and increasing growth of the District as a great shopping destination.

How does one join?
Joining is simple. Just come to any regular meeting of the Association, second Tuesday of every month at Shakabrah Java, 6th Avenue at Oakes, 8 a.m., and see Cary Nilson, membership chairman, at the meeting. If you can’t be there, see Cary at Meier’s House of Clocks, 2712 Sixth Avenue.
