The 6th Avenue Art Committee
Purpose: The 6th Avenue Merchants Association Art Committee actively promotes the creation and installation of public art projects in the district. The committee works closely together with the businesses and neighbors.
Collaboration with the businesses is crucial. We encourage businesses to team up with us and support projects in kind, with materials, know-how, ideas and direct contributions.
Projects: The 6th Avenue Merchants Association will retain ownership of public projects funded (in part or totally) by the Association. Continuity is important in order to maintain a strong neighborhood identity.
A small annual fund will aid in maintaining and cleaning art projects periodically.
The Merchants Association’s insurance policy will be reviewed and appropriate riders considered covering the public pieces.
Selection: A panel of interested community members (appointed by the committee) will jury applicants and select the appropriate artist or design. Members of theAssociation’s Art Committee are excluded from applying for projects. A call to artists will go out for each project; the call is open to all artists living within the city limits of Tacoma.
Installation: Art will be installed on public property whenever possible. The Art Committee will make sure all necessary permits are obtained from the city of Tacoma.
Accession: The Art Committee will ensure that all works of art are properly accessioned, catalogued and photographed. All public works will be labeled appropriately.
