Big Turnout for Sixth Avenue Area 2007 Earth Day Cleanup

A largest-ever group of about a hundred men, women and children assembled early Saturday, April 21st at Epworth LeSourd Church, to pick up trash and refuse in the Sixth Avenue area. About forty of them were parents and children from Grant School of Expressive Arts. Ten students came from UPS and five from Jason Lee. Chopstix sent a crew of five of their staff. The Sixth Avenue Association was also represented by Bill Connolly, Ron Pulliam, Dave Parker, Cary Nilson, Tom Johnson. Many were “just neighbors” who came out to help. City Councilman Tom Stenger came as did Pierce County Commissioner Tim Ferrell.

The “picker-uppers” were sent out in teams of five to clean up assigned blocks, alleys, streets and sidewalks. The area covered was Sprague to Proctor, North Eighth to South Eighth. Many large bags of trash were gathered. The dozens of filled bags were picked up on Monday, April 23rd, by community service crews from the Department of Corrections. Trash bags, safety vests and gloves were supplied by Tacoma C.A.R.E.S. department of the City.

Organizing the event were Pamela Butler, an active neighborhood “go-getter”, Park Commissioner Ryan Mello (also a Sixth Avenue district resident), and Bill Connolly, president of the Sixth Avenue Business Association.
A generous number of door prizes and gift certificates donated by Sixth Avenue businesses were given out at the noon end of the event. Donors included Masa /Asado, Chopstix, Northwest Costume, Ryan Mello, Nautilus Design, Gateway to India, Vino Aquino, Jazzbones, Bead Factory, Shakabrah, Tacoma’s Best Grooming, Backstage Video. A special prize for the most unusual item found as trash was given by PrePaid Legal. Other generous Avenue donors were Old Milwaukee Café, cupcakes; Highland Hill Safeway, sheet cakes; Starbucks, coffee; Garlic Jim’s and Ryan Mello, pizzas, 6th Ave Neighborhood Market, bottled water and soft drinks; Bartell Drugs, bottled water, Nautilus Design, promotional flyers.
We thank all the individuals who came out and picked up for three hours, and the businesses who donated to make this an outstanding day.
