Big Turnout for Sixth Avenue Area 2007 Earth Day Cleanup A largest-ever group of about a hundred men, women and children assembled early Saturday, April 21st at Epworth LeSourd Church, to pick up trash and refuse in the Sixth Avenue area. About forty of them were parents and children from Grant School of Expressive Arts. Ten students came from UPS and five from Jason Lee. Chopstix sent a crew of five of their staff. The Sixth Avenue Association was also represented by Bill Connolly, Ron Pulliam, Dave Parker, Cary Nilson, Tom Johnson. Many were “just neighbors” who came out to help. City Councilman Tom Stenger came as did Pierce County Commissioner Tim Ferrell. The “picker-uppers” were sent out in teams of five to clean up assigned blocks, alleys, streets and sidewalks. The area covered was Sprague to Proctor, North Eighth to South Eighth. Many large bags of trash were gathered. The dozens of filled bags were picked up on Monday, April 23rd, by community service crews from the Department of Corrections. Trash bags, safety vests and gloves were supplied by Tacoma C.A.R.E.S. department of the City. Organizing the event were Pamela Butler, an active neighborhood “go-getter”, Park Commissioner Ryan Mello (also a Sixth Avenue district resident), and Bill Connolly, president of the Sixth Avenue Business Association. |
